Quotations

A hero is not a term I would apply to myself, but I’m flattered.
Upon receiving the second annual Hollywood Hero Award, 1 May 2007

Yes, I am a feminist. Feminism simply means a belief in women having social and political rights equal to men.
Reader’s Digest, February 2006

I really am, in many ways, living the life I always wanted.
USA WEEKEND, January 2006

My motto is, if a person can do it, I can do it.
USA WEEKEND, January 2006

I’m always completely fine not working, unless something incredible comes along

“I’m always amazed that people ask me, ‘Do you think we’ll see a female president in our lifetime?’ And I’m like, what century are you from, you know? The only direction this is going is that we will have a female president!”
Ellen Degeneres talkshow 2006

Ellen Degeneres: As soon as the show is over I’m announcing my candidacy .
Geena Davis: Ya know, I was thinking actually myself you know, I mean, I’m already there. I have the clothes….
Ellen: Well, if you have the clothes….

It’s fun being the President! Unless there’s a crisis, of course.
- on her role as Mackenzie Allen

It made perfect sense to me that I would play this part. I have always been interested in roles that are going to be challenging for me but also, characters that other women can identify with.
- on her role as Mackenzie Allen

As I was coming in, I felt a little tug at my skirt. And I looked, and there was a little girl - maybe 8 or 10 - in her first party dress, and she said, “Because of you I want to be president someday”. And I just… well, that didn’t actually happen. Awwww, but it could have.
Golden Globe 2006 acceptance speech

Archery is a battle with yourself, a war with yourself. It’s really addictive.
Sports Illustrated, September 1999

Archers are pretty focused.
Sports Illustrated, November 2002

When I saw archery, which I had never really looked at before, I wondered if it needed some of the same skills as pistol shooting - which I according to my Long Kiss coach have a real natural ability for.
Sports Illustrated, November 2002

I competed in the high jump in high school, but I wasn’t very good. My technique was to stand around looking intimidating because I was so tall.
Sports Illustrated, November 2002

I don’t cook.

I have an elbow that bends the wrong way, and I’d do things like stand in an elevator and the doors would close, and I’d pretend that my arm had got caught in it, and then I’d scream, ‘Ow, ow, put it back!’

I haven’t ever gone to any Mensa meetings.
Sports Illustrated, November 2002

I want to play characters who are in charge of their own destiny, who are self-determining, for good or bad, who make mistakes or not, but make their own choices and decisions. That way, I avoid playing victims and things like that. I don’t feel that I need to contribute to that particular thing.
Scene, November/December 1994

We’re making this as entertainment. But God willing, if this show stays on and people see a woman in that office for a while, I think it will help people become more used to it. It’s certainly about time that we had a few female presidents.
USA Today September 2005

If i had my life to live over…

I’d dare to make more mistakes next time. I’d relax, I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been on this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I’d have fewer imaginary ones.

You see, I’m one of those people who live sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I’ve had my moments, and if I had it to do over again, I’d have more of them. In fact, I’d try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day, I’ve been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat and a parachute. If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have.

If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that later in fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.
