Geena takes aim

You have the right to play sports and to be the best athlete you can be. But today, your rights may be in jeopardy. Here’s what you can do. Use our Title IX library to learn about the law and to educate others. Grade your school to see if it’s in compliance with the law. Write your legislators and ask them to support Title IX. We’ve created Geena Takes Aim to teach you all about your rights in sport and–if you’re not being treated fairly–to lead you along the best path to create positive change. Dream big, set goals and don’t let anyone stand in your way of being the best athlete you can be!

GeenaWith these words, Geena introduces a special section of the Women’s Sports Foundation, called Geena Takes Aim. The aim is to let girls and young women know their rights in sport and teach them practical ways to deal with situations they face which may not be fair - or even against the law.

Title IX: What is it?

Title IX is the portion of the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in educational institutions that receive any federal funds. In brief, Title IX states:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Title IX applies to any educational program in an institution that receives any federal funds, the majority of schools in this country, from elementary schools through colleges. If educational institutions are found to violate Title IX, their federal funding can be withdrawn.
