Geena at the Billie Awards The Billie Awards recognize media excellence in women’s sports and physical activity. The event celebrates the positive portrayal of female athletes in the media. The Billies were held on April 11, 2007, at The Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills, Calif., and featured a performance by Sir Elton John. Also in attendance were 40 champion female athletes including Billie Jean King. Getty Images Editorial has quite a few HQ photos from the event. Geena Davis, star of “A League of Their Own” charmed the crowd and paid tribute to King because “she bucked centuries of accepted practice” in her fight for equality in sports and society.” Read the full report at the Out in Hollywood blog, there is also an interesting article in the Daily News.

Ladies celebrity golf tournament!

April 21-23, Geena participated at the 2nd Annual Ladies First Celebrity Golf Classic at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. I haven’t managed to find any detailed schedule of what exactly she did there, but my guess is that she used the opportunity to talk about the See Jane program..!

Q&A With Geena Davis

An accomplished archer (she has ranked as high as 13th in the U.S.) and a trustee for the Women’s Sports Foundation, the 46-year-old Academy Award winner had her first child, Alizeh, in April.

SI: What is your role with the Women’s Sports Foundation?

Geena Davis: I have a Web site [GeenaTakesAim.com] that parents and girls can use to learn about Title IX and take action if they find their school is not in compliance. Thirty years after Title IX passed, 80 percent of schools are not in compliance.

SI: Were you much of an athlete growing up Wareham, Mass.?

- I competed in the high jump in high school, but I wasn’t very good. My technique was to stand around looking intimidating because I was so tall.

SI: Would Thelma from Thelma and Louise have been a supporter of Title IX?

- For sure. You know, she might not have had to go on that rampage if she had played sports in school.
